Mistakes are usually something to avoid — especially in advertising and marketing, where perfection feels like the only option. Misspelled words, broken links, pricing errors ... we've almost certainly all had our day ruined by falling victim to something like this in our careers. Plain and simple, it's a crummy feeling. But what if an error could actually work for you? Welcome to the world of "typo marketing."
Typo marketing is a marketing tactic where intentional spelling errors, grammatical mistakes and deliberate goofs are used to grab attention. And you might be thinking, "That can't actually be a thing, can it?" Well a quick google search of "typo marketing" would tell you otherwise, complete with plenty of examples, strategies, case studies and more to support how a strategic error can give your brand a lift.
Here's a couple examples:
- Coors Light "Case of the Mondays" Super Bowl Campaign
- Snickers "You're Not You When You're Hungry" Campaign
Now, I wouldn't recommend getting in the habit of making mistakes, intentional or otherwise, but if your brand needs a boost, maybe there is a creative way to engage with your audience with a strategically misplaced keystroke.
Still not convinced? Check out this infographic for a couple more reasons why errors can help you stand out.
